The mailing list software recommended by MG Web Services is PHP List, an open-source newsletter manager that keeps you in contact with your audience. Phplist is free to download or you can install it yourself through Cpanel and the Fantastico installer. It is free to install and use, and is relatively easy to integrate with any website. Phplist is downloaded more than 10,000 times per month, (very popular!), and is sponsored by tincan.
I've hacked phplist a lot, and am able to manage the user attribute database information that you create through the program, and use it to display that info in other areas of a web site, such as the membership list I did for the Bowen Island Chamber of Commerce website.
The administrative area uses colours styled to their own taste, and my customization includes adding your own logo to the header area as well as matching the style of the public facing areas of your web site.
